What are dupe perfumes?

A dupe perfume — also called an inspiration or equivalent perfume — is a fragrance created to smell identical or very similar to a branded perfume, but at a much more accessible price. If your favorite perfume costs €90 a bottle, its dupe might cost you from €9.95.

The obvious question is: why such a difference in price? And the answer is simpler than it seems.

Why do they cost so much less?

The price of a branded perfume isn't just explained by what's inside the bottle. A significant part of the cost goes to advertising, packaging design, celebrity campaigns, and distribution margins. When you eliminate all that and focus exclusively on the scent formulation, the production cost drops drastically.

A scent cannot be patented. What is protected is the brand, the name, the bottle design, and the commercial image. But the olfactory formula — the combination of ingredients that produces that smell — is free. Any manufacturer can create a fragrance that smells the same using equivalent ingredients, and that is perfectly legal.

There are very low-quality dupes — basically water with some scent that fades in minutes. But there are also dupes with a high concentration of essence, made with first-class ingredients, where the difference from the original is practically imperceptible.

How to distinguish a good dupe? Four clear indicators:

Longevity. A good dupe perfume lasts hours on the skin, not minutes. If it fades in 20 minutes, the essence concentration is too low.

Sillage. It has to leave a trail. If only you can smell it by putting your nose to your wrist, it's not enough.

Olfactory Fidelity. When compared to the original, the differences should be minimal — especially in the heart and base notes of the fragrance.

No irritations. A well-formulated perfume does not cause redness or skin reactions.
